Book Review – Really Care for Them by Mareo McCracken
Mareo McCracken is both a student and practitioner of professional selling. I read over 50 books a year (most of them sales & marketing titles) but there’s one person who reads even more that I do – and that’s Mareo McCracken. Which I why I was so excited when I discovered that Mareo was releasing his own title, because the breadth of his sales understanding is vast.
Really Care for Them by Mareo McCracken
It was no surprise then, when I picked up Really Care for Them, I found a distillation of the best practices in selling infused with Mareo’s original thinking. In a nutshell, it’s brilliant, accessible, and well worth the read.
The full title of the book is: Really Care for Them: How Everyone Can Use the Power of Caring to Earn Trust, Grow Sales, and Increase Income. No Matter What You Sell or Who You Sell It To. It’s definitely a contender for the longest subtitle. The book contains 99 short topics organized into eight categories:
How To Prepare
Take More Action
Rules For Success
The Most Accessible Sales Book Ever
The micro-topics are designed in such a way that you can open to any one of them and quickly get salient and meaningful insight in just a minute or so. It’s perfect as a discussion starter for sales meetings, or as a once-a-day read to sharpen your sales ax so-to-speak. This design easily makes it the most accessible sales book I’ve ever read. It’s more than an encyclopedia however, there is logic to the sequence of the topics and how they are organized. So if you enjoy a straight read-through like I do, it’s flows very well. I read the entirety of it in one evening.
Some Heavy Stuff
There is some sublime stuff in here. Inside you’ll find insights on personal achievement, motivation, accountability, resilience and of course, selling skills. And you’ll find timeless wisdom from classic thought leaders like, Viktor Frankl, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Goethe. Thought leaders from the recent past like, Winston Churchill, Peter Drucker, and Stephen Covey. As well as modern insights from Anthony Iannarino, Mike Weinberg, and Tony Hughes. Don’t confuse this with a quote book however. It’s Mareo’s own thought leadership in each chapter that weaves these concepts together in a fine tapestry.
The overarching theme, as you might have guessed from the subtitle, is how authentically caring for customers not only delivers the best results, but is also a tremendously more enjoyable way to sell. Rather than manipulation, there is facilitation. Rather than tricks, there is strategy. Rather than “overcoming”, there is alignment. I can’t imagine anyone reading these pages and not coming away thinking “Yes! That’s how I want to sell and be sold to.”
Mareo has distilled eons sales achievement insight and carefully outlined them in one tremendously accessible book. It’s a major time-saving accomplishment for readers. I’d argue that pound for pound, and minute for minute there is no better investment for your reading time. Mastering these principles will make you successful – and make your customers love you at the same time. I highly recommend it. Two thumbs up!
